Best part about being a coach

There is nothing more satisfying than seeing how CrossFit transforms people. CrossFit enhances their body, their mind, their health, their relationships, their work & everything in between. It’s fun just being a part of that.

Experience

In 2006 Christi and I bought a personal training studio in south Florida. We left Calgary bright eyed and bushy tailed. We were fortunate enough to work with some of the NHLs finest including the Florida Panthers, a few Olympic athletes, an LPGA tour pro and the world’s best wakeboarder.

Although the high-profile athletes were great we were really fortunate to have developed strong relationships with regular Joes, desk jockeys and stay-at-home moms. After more than 10000 hours of one-on-one & small group training as well as nutrition/weight loss coaching we decided to pack it all in and move back to Calgary to start CrossFit Currie Barracks. We couldn’t be happier.

Best part about being a coach

In order to be a good coach you must be able to meet each individual where they are and help them find what they are truly looking for. This may be tips on exercise but being a true coach involves listening and trying to understand each individual that comes through the door. Once we have goals set and new things to strive for individuals become happy, stronger, fitter and more motivated in their minds and bodies. This is exciting for both coach and athlete.

Best part about being a coach

Sweating, laughing, cheering, openness, learning and seeing someone give everything they have in a workout no matter what they look like or feel like. Get’s me real torqued up!

Experience

I began CrossFit in 2013 after a a couple months of traveling throughout Europe (read: weight gain from boozing and eating rich foods- don’t regret it!) and was immediately hooked. I continued to travel and WOD all over the world. I also was the strength and conditioning coach for the University of Windsor women’s basketball team that went on to win their 3rd National Championship.

Best part about being a coach

Movement accountability. Continuing education. In any given class at any given time, I feel like I am part watchful movement tactician, part passionate teacher, part cheerleader and part DeeJay 😀 I am proud to be a Coach and love having my own flock!

Experience

From Vancouver originally, I only dabbled in CrossFit for my first 2 years. My priority then was Ultimate Frisbee, as I played on a competitive team and was cross-training for various tournaments all over the world. I have played in Brazil, Australia, Czech Republic, Italy & USA, with my Club team from Vancouver. The CrossFit program extended my playing career by at least 3 years. Admittedly, at first I had a big ego which I only pretended to leave at the door, so I proved to be a difficult study because I did not take direction well and thought I knew more than I did. One coach recognized this flaw, took me aside and challenged my ways, which I really needed, and I finally learned to shut my mouth and listen. It was like starting all over again, and I would have to liken that moment to a life-changing experience. Since moving to Calgary, I got the L1 Certification and have gained a renewed appreciation for this sport and community, seeing it from this side.

Best part about being a coach

Coaching affords me the opportunity to engage my analytical brain. I love watching people move and trying to figure out alternative pathways that increase their efficiency and power. This is balanced with the occasion to witness people filling their spirit by pushing themselves beyond what they thought was capable. The joy and pride in physical accomplishment is contagious.

Experience

I began my interest in movement as kid with gymnastics. In University, my body found an outlet in dance. After completing a degree in Zoology, with a minor in dance, I chose to follow a path in the performing arts. I was fortunate enough to have a performance career that led me to perform, train and/or teach across North America and Europe. I have studied weight training, plyometrics and several somatic forms including yoga and Pilates, to name a few. Unhappy with the decline in my level of fitness over the years, I took a chance on CrossFit and have not looked back.
