Coaches Notes

CFCB: When did you join us?

Dallas: I originally joined another box in Calgary when I started CrossFit in 2018, but when I started a new job with a new company in June 2019 that is down the street from CFCB, I made the move and have felt welcome ever since as I have gotten to know the coaching team and the members. I love this place.

CFCB: Why is CrossFit important to you and what keeps bringing you to the gym?
Dallas: At first, I saw CrossFit as a workout, just another way to burn some calories and ensure I got my sweat on a few days a week. After about 6 months, I started to see physical results and attributed that to the training I received at CrossFit.

In February of this year, I purchased some personal training sessions, and the idea was to get at a couple of moves, in particular, those I struggled with and those that "looked cool", like butterfly pullups. Then COVID-19 hit. I knew I had made progress physically, which had improved my self confidence, so I made a plan to stick with my fitness as much as possible. Barracks was the constant in my life during lockdown. I looked forward to it everyday, and in hindsight, I realized how much I appreciated and needed it. Additionally, for the first time ever, everyone was in the same place in terms of being home, instead of rushing in for a workout and out for life afterwards. It was during these calls that I got to know people.

This is where it all came together for me that CrossFit was more than just a sweat. You could get good at it. And you could get to know the people around you. So, what keeps bringing me in? Achievement of ever-evolving goals and the amazing people that are there with me.

CFCB: What sort of things do you love doing outside of the gym that the gym may have improved for you?
Dallas: I love travel, and in particular semi-solo travel. Over the last few years, I have gone on trips with small travel groups. I have always had a reserved demeanor, but I actually think that the gym, and achieving these goals that I used to think would never happen, has improved my self-confidence immensely. I would fully attribute the shift in feelings from being anxious about going on a trip with new people, to being excited about the opportunity and embracing the unknown.

CFCB: Looking back to day one of CrossFit, what's one thing you can do today that you thought was impossible at the time?
Dallas: All of them, but in particular, in the 'bring a friend class' I first attended, there were toes-to-bar in the workout. In between knees to air, I watched others do T2B, and thought I would never be able to do that. Because of two tips received from Eric (lean back) and Kelsey (kick my feet up), I have nailed T2B.
